14th Hole Vegetation Works Next Week
Posted on: 27 October
Background
In 2007 YYGC had an extensive arborist report completed on our vegetation. It was noticed that over the past 50 years we had increasingly populating the course with the incorrect species and poor long term healthy trees. We have been slowly reducing the number of dangerous trees around the course.
As part of the renovation/restoration works we carried out an extensive internal tree removal process whilst restoring the golf course back to the 1936 Survey plan. With the internal trees in much better shape and the course vegetation landscape masterplan completed, we need to work on boundary vegetation issues.
Vision
Replanting the boundaries is important for the long-term benefit of the course and the members, and the plan must be undertaken with the long-term interests in mind. It is important to line the perimeter of the course with quality, indigenous eucalypts blocking views of houses, roads, and power lines. Obviously, this will involve some short-term pain as trees are removed so the boundaries can be properly replanted.
14th hole
The club plans to plant the space between the left side of the 14th hole all the way to the fence – and up to the back of the 15th tee – using primarily Coastal Manna Gums, the indigenous eucalypts of the area in conjunction with indigenous woodland understorey species to provide a full screen. Initial plantings will also include fast growing Acacia species which will help to provide a rapid screen, fix nitrogen in the soil and help protect the plants around them.
Between the woodland boundary planting and the first 200m of hole 14 there is space to also plant sandy heathland and wallaby grassland. This will help with the screening of Warrigal Road and to provide a wide transition from fairway edge to the boundary planting.
Next week
The process of removing the remaining trees will begin next week and then tree stumps will either be removed or stump ground and then we will strip some of the area back to native soil as well as tidy up the existing soil piles. Once this is completed we will then plant out the area.
