H.G. McRoberts Yarra Yarra Cup

Posted on: 10 November

On Saturday 9 November, in exceptionally fine weather, with the course playing well, two players headed off to contest one of our most sought-after Board events, the HG McRoberts – Yarra Yarra Cup.

Dare one say, players at each end of the golfing spectrum: David Zhu at a very young age of 13, with a fantastic handicap of 4 for one so young, against Kosala Kularatne, (Kozy to most), not really so old but against David he was, and playing off a handicap of 16.

David started the match with a bomb down the first, simple shot to the green, 2 putts for 4 whilst Kozy shot through the green and couldn’t get the up and down: David 1 up.

From then on Kozy hit his straps, and as much as David was playing exceptional golf, the handicap difference started to tell. David made the turn only 3 over the card, but Kozy was 3 up.

They each made great 4’s on the 10th, but Kozy had a shot; now 4 up. David’s up and down on 11 gave him a long-awaited win. The 12th was halved and Kozy made a miraculous up and down from a greenside bunker on 13, which was a typical ‘match play’ scenario, i.e. never give in.

The 14th was halved and then Kozy really put the boots in, hitting to a metre on 15, whilst David unfortunately drifted into the left bunker; game over, 4 and 3 to Kozy.

It was a pleasure to be walking the course with these two members, watching the excellent quality of the golf and the friendly but competitive nature of each, doing their best to win this prestigious event.
