2024 Les Shaw Memorial Shield Final
Posted on: 26 August
The 2024 Les Shaw memorial Shield was contested on Saturday 24 August between Brendan McManus & Mal Hardy playing against David and Angus Standfield.
An early lead to Brendan/Mal 2 up as a result of excellent winning pars on 2 and 3 by Mal followed by halved holes until 6 with a par win 3 to Angus and back to 1 up. Making the most of their strokes, wins on 7 &8 saw Brendan/Mal turn 3 up after 9 holes.
Brendan’s birdie 4 on 9 with 2 strokes resulting in a net 2 a particular highlight .
Mal consolidated the lead with wins on 10 &11 to go 5 up, however not to be denied David & Angus fought back. An outstanding birdie to Angus on 12 {3 foot putt} and a solid win to David on 13 and the margin back to 3 holes with 5 to play.
A clutch 6 foot putt for par with a stroke gave Brendan a timely win on 14 – 4 up. A good par win from David on 15 kept the match alive however Mal’s solid 6 on 16 with a stroke was enough for the necessary half and closed out the win 3 & 2.
Very well done to David and Angus on being a finalist and congratulations to Brendan & Mal on their second Shaw Shield victory having defended last years win – I think the only time of a back to back win by the same pair.
A four ball match play knockout competition first played in 1948. The trophy was donated by Member Phil Oates to commemorate the contribution of Les Shaw in developing the site at Bentleigh East. Les Shaw served on Committee in 1927 and 1928. After becoming Club Captain in 1929, he served a further term on Committee from 1931 to 1935. He provided excellent liaison between the course designer Alex Russell, the green keeper and the Committee as the course was being constructed. Winners need to win 6 matches to be champions, congratulations to Brendan and Mal on winning.
