Yarra Yarra defeats Commonwealth in Interclub Match
Posted on: 25 March
Being played for the first time since 2019 Yarra Yarra have defeated Commonwealth 7 to 5 in the annual match between the clubs.
With 24 Members representing each club with six 4BBB matches played at each venue it provides a wonderful opportunity for members of the close neighbours to become acquainted through friendly competition.
Yarra Yarra was victorious 3.5 to 2.5 at both courses to win for the 16th win against Commonwealth’s 10.
The Interclub match between the Commonwealth and Yarra Yarra Golf Clubs commenced in 1949 in recognition of the close association of the two clubs during the war years.
Yarra Yarra had been commandeered as an army camp and its Lady Members had been given rights to play at Commonwealth.
The famed Sloan Morpeth (Manager at Commonwealth) managed both clubs for several years as an economy measure because of Yarra Yarra’s circumstances (he was made an Honorary Life member as well).
For many years, the “trophy” was a flag – handed back and forth. Then, as it disintegrated (or was lost) a trophy was purchased during John Taylor’s Presidency at Yarra Yarra in 1989.
